Sales & Marketing

What the job is like

People who choose sales and marketing should do so because they like people. A marketing person must work with all types of clients, either by phone or in person.

Some marketing representatives travel a great deal to meet with customers, and some have all customers within a day’s drive.

Marketing personnel promote and sell services to meet sales targets and generate revenue; respond to customer needs and requirements with the appropriate service and maintain a high-level of customer service with existing customers and leverage relationships to expand business.

This position also develops relationships with new clients by prospecting and responding to business development leads; negotiate pricing; develop/maintain customer relationships and develop/maintain marketing program.

Essential skills or attributes

  • Intermediate Computer Skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)
  • Intermediate Math Skills (Algebra, Statistics, Geometry)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and business etiquette (customer service)
  • Basic knowledge of transportation rules and regulations
  • Understanding of warehouse strategies and processes
  • Understanding of supply chain strategies and processes
  • Understanding of supply chain and warehouse theory
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local regulations and compliance
  • Experience in budgets
  • Experience in P & L (Profit and Loss)
  • Ability to read and interpret industry related reports and data
  • Negotiation skills

Usual required training

High School Diploma/GED.  Many companies may require a Bachelor’s Degree or Master’s Degree.
