Position Title
Railroad Engineer/Conductor
What the job is like
Railroad engineers in the logistics industry are responsible for moving millions of tons of freight each year. They run locomotives and monitor equipment and make adjustments in operations according to the amount of freight carried, condition of rails, and number of cars.
Duties include:
- Confer with conductors or traffic control personnel via computer, phone and radio to receive instructions and information;
- Inspect locomotives to verify adequate fuel, sand, water, and supplies before each run;
- Interpret train orders, signals and railroad rules and regulations;
- Observe tracks for obstructions;
- Inspect locomotives after runs to detect damage;
- Prepare reports.
Essential skills or attributes
- Beginner Computer Skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)
- Basic Math Skills (Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication, Fractions, Percentages)
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Basic knowledge of transportation rules and regulations
- Knowledge of Federal, State and Local regulations and compliance
- Experience in the application of regulatory compliance
- Ability to read and interpret industry related reports and data
Usual required training
Federal Licensing is required. Industry specific formal training programs that includes classroom, simulator and hands-on experience.
Ongoing unannounced periodic testing may occur.
