Position Title
Commercial Driver – Motor Vehicle/OTR (Over The Road)
What the job is like
Commercial truck drivers spend almost all of their work time driving: some drive locally or regionally, but some cross the country time after time.
Today’s trucks are much more comfortable than those in year’s past; some have sleeping cabins and televisions. Truck drivers are independent and chose their career as an alternative to office work.
Duties may include:
- Drive tractor/trailer combination;
- pick up and deliver freight;
- secure freight on trailer;
- read maps and plan route;
- comply with all government regulations for driving;
- interact with customers almost daily;
- provide information and documentation to carrier management.
Essential skills or attributes
- Beginner Computer Skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)
- Experience with Transportation Management Systems
- Basic Math Skills (Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication, Fractions, Percentages)
- Good oral and written communication skills
- Basic knowledge of transportation rules and regulations
- Knowledge of Federal, State and Local regulations and compliance
- Experience in the application of regulatory compliance
- Negotiation skills
Usual required training
High School Diploma/ GED. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required.
Experience required varies by company. Industry related training and license endorsements may be required.
