Position Title
Safety Manager
What the job is like
Company-wide safety is the concern of the safety manager.
The safety manager must visit all areas of the company to determine compliance with safety regulations and dictate procedure to keep the company within the law.
Duties generally include:
- Monitor/detect existing or potential workplace hazards (e.g., ergonomic conditions);
- Implement control of workplace hazards through engineering practices, personal protective equipment, and policy changes;
- Comply with safety and health regulations (e.g. OSHA);
- Develop and conduct employee safety and health training;
- Conduct and/or participate in safety meetings and on safety committees;
- Maintain OSHA records/documentation;
- Maintain and interpret material safety data sheets (MSDS);
- Conduct workplace safety and health audits to detect existing or potential violations;
- Investigate workplace incidents and accidents and worker’s compensation claims;
- Track trend statistics for accidents and incidents; champion and model safety practices;
- Maintain professional certifications.
Essential skills or attributes
- Beginner Computer Skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)
- Basic Math Skills (Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication, Fractions, Percentages)
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Excellent interpersonal skills and business etiquette (customer service)
- Basic knowledge of transportation rules and regulations
- Knowledge of Federal, State and Local regulations and compliance
- Experience in the application of regulatory compliance
- Coaching and Training
- Ability to read and interpret industry related reports and data
Usual required training
High School/GED. Bachelors Degree, Associate’s Degree or some college may be required.
Experience required varies by company.
Industry related training and certification required.
