Bioterrorism Specialist

What the job is like

Bioterrorism is the intentional release of biological agents (viruses, bacteria and other germs) to harm people or disrupt the economy.

A bioterrorism specialist researches this issue and tries to anticipate how it might affect his/her employer.

Companies that work with food or pharmaceuticals may come under attack, especially if there is global distribution of their product, and logistics personnel are involved because products are most vulnerable during distribution. 

Duties may include:
- Maintaining US Dept of Agriculture (USDA) records/documentation;
- Plan and conduct employee training programs to comply with environmental,
- Safety and health regulations;
- Assess and audit facilities to detect existing or potential violations;
- Determine preventative measures;
- Apply local, state, and federal regulations;
- Maintain professional certification.

Essential skills or attributes

  • Beginner Computer Skills (MS Word, MS Excel, MS PowerPoint)
  • Basic Math Skills (Addition, Subtraction, Division, Multiplication, Fractions, Percentages)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and business etiquette (customer service)
  • Basic knowledge of transportation rules and regulations
  • Knowledge of Federal, State and Local regulations and compliance
  • Experience in the application of regulatory compliance
  • Coaching and Training
  • Ability to read and interpret industry related reports and data

Usual required training

Associate’s Degree. Some companies may require a Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree.
